The hot NFL news is that Terrell Owens will be joining the Cincinnati Bengals for the 2010 NFL season under a one year contract. This news came as Owens was down to this one option after the Rams announced they were not going to make an offer. On to our most pressing concern here-What is the fantasy football impact of this announcement?
It may be a little early to say for sure, but signs look positive that Owens could have some fantasy impact in 2010. The Bengals had signed Antonio Bryant to a sizable contract earlier this year, but they must have some reservations about him based on this signing of Owens.
Two of the top Bengals offensive stars were fans of this decision. Both Chad Ochocinco and Carson Palmer were fans of the move with Ochocinco wanting the move for a while, but Palmer came on board after spending time working out with Owens.
This can only be a positive sign for Owens fantasy prospects. With the unquestioned starting QB already establishing a chemistry with him that can only help. And having the starting #1 WR in your camp is another positive sign too.
Already a reasonably efficient offensive unit with talent at the skill positions, the addition of Owens adds another known quantity receiver who can exploit what the defenses give him. The Bengals play in a tough division with some solid defenses on the schedule so maybe there are more possession catches and third down grabs in Owens’ future (think Hines Ward style maybe?) than long bombs (those are probably going to be Ochocinco’s!) but as a later round draft pick Owens may have some value. It will be recommended to see how he gels with the team in the preseason and what is coming out of the locker room reporting to make sure that all is good with the team chemistry, but as a potential #2 WR Owens has some value.
