How do I setup the scoring system?
The scoring systems for Fantasy Football can be extremely varied, and customized and tweaked in almost any style you choose.
Some key questions to look at here beyond the “standard” rules are to consider what, if any, options you want to add into your scoring system.
For example:
Will special teams players yards and TD’s count?
Will any points be awarded on a per reception, carry, or completion basis?
Will any points be awarded based on length of the touchdown run, catch, or pass? ie bonus points
Are players penalized for fumbles or interceptions?
The list can continue endlessly, but this should give some general ideas about the questions to consider. I am including a link to a page below on this site that will detail examples of custom scoring that have [...]
Redraft vs Keeper league
This is one of my favorite questions about Fantasy Football. The type of league chosen here can have a huge impact on the league in the long term.
In a redraft league, players re-enter the draft pool each season and are available to be drafted the next season by anyone. In a keeper league, some number of players from 1 to the entire roster size can be protected from re-entering the draft pool and can be kept for the next season. The amount of players protected if a keeper league is chosen is defined in the league rules.
Redraft leagues are popular because they give everyone a chance to get any player each year based on draft position, and don’t allow the top players to [...]
You need a Commish
Someone has to be the go to person for the league. Someone has to set it up online, collect the dues and league fees, make any prize payouts, arbitrate disputes, and interpret rules. The Commissioner (Commish) is that person in your Fantasy Football league. Being the Commish can be a thankless job, but someone must do it, and having a good person doing it can make or break a league in the long run.
Attributes that must be present to be the Commish include honesty, integrity, and a strong sense of ethics. Someone who cannot judge a situation objectively and fairly will not be a good Commish.
While most leagues operate in a semi-democracy with majority rule in most disputes, the Commish has a fair amount of [...]
Where will we set up our league?
The Legend recommends CBS Sportsline to host your league. I love this site. The league management and player management options are fantastic and the live scoring is accurate, fast, and reliable. The downtime on this site seems to be minimal and it is operational when you need it most – while watching the games and tracking the live scores. One nice feature that has always been a hit is that the live scoring page also has a chat box which can be used to talk trash to your opponents! They also have an Iphone app for live scoring if you have an Iphone.
Other sites that I am familiar with from past usage include Fanball, Yahoo, and ESPN. Fanball has been less than desirable in some [...]
There are two basic types of draft, traditional and auction.
In a traditional draft, teams are assigned a draft position based on either random drawing or the prior year’s finish for existing leagues. Traditional drafts follow a “snake” style format. What this means is that if a league has 10 teams and a team picks in 10th position, then they also get the 11th pick (or first pick in the second round). As another example, the team with the 8th pick also then would get the 13th pick. This continues on until each team has drafted a full roster of players as defined by the league rules.
In an auction draft, teams are given a “salary cap” that defines the maximum amount of available funds to use [...]
How many teams should we have in our league?
The number of teams in your Fantasy Football league can be driven by multiple motives, and is an important factor in starting up your league or making a decision to expand.
As a founder of a new league, a minimum number of teams (and owners) needs to be found in order to have a competitive environment. For example, in a league with only four teams, every owner would have a top notch star at every position and there wouldn’t be as much value in drafting strategy and skills. In a larger league of 10-12 teams however, the scarcity of talent at some positions will make a strong draft strategy invaluable.
If you can get 10 or 12 friends and family to join a league, then those are [...]
What is Fantasy Football anyway?
It seems like most people have some idea of what it means to play Fantasy Football, but it is a question asked frequently enough to cover it with a general high level answer. When NFL season rolls around and I start to discuss Fantasy issues, multiple people get interested, and answering that starting question is something that often leads them to join or create a league once they get what it’s all about. So, here is the basic answer for beginners.
Fantasy football is a game based on the real life performances of individual NFL players. NFL team loyalty has little to do with building a successful Fantasy team even thought it can be even more exciting when your favorite team’s top player is also building [...]
Starting a Fantasy Football league will be one of the most exciting tasks you can be involved in as a sports fan. Being the energizing force to get your friends together and pull the trigger on this “Fantasy football thing” will bring you a lot of pride.
But how to start? For now, I am going to leave the plan for how to evangelize about the fun and the competition to your own methods and let you persuade your friends and family to join up with you.
What will come next though are some practical questions some of which are easier to answer than others.
At the most basic, what is Fantasy Football anyway? It is a game where each team will assemble a roster of players through [...]
Why “The Legend”?
The Legend. Quite the name to live up to. I use it as my handle here because of using the name in a passing conversation regarding my league dominance one year and it stuck with me. What could lead one to use such a title?
After playing Fantasy Football for the past 9 years, I will let my record speak for itself. In that time playing primarily in two main high competition leagues (I am the Commissioner in one) with serious owners, and in recent years, a few other public leagues, The Legend’s lifetime stats are as follows:
63% Regular Season winning percentage and a 65% Playoff winning percentage. Fantasy Super Bowl appearances in 7 title games with 4 Fantasy Bowl championships. Also in the trophy case [...]
